Exploring Temperament and Character Traits in Nurses and Nursing Students in A Large Regional Area of Australia
The level of measurement for the data collected used both public and private health care nurses and nursing students who were enrolled in their last year of academic degrees. Online survey was used as the key methodology of collecting data from the participants. It covered such elements as nursing title, core work, level of education, time served in the profession, work place location, age and sex.
The gender of the participants used assumed a nominal form of data so that 404 females were used out of the 451 participants. The overall male participants were 47 in number. Employment data also assumed nominal data so that 187 participants of the study worked as registered nurses while 101 participants were formidable nursing students who doubled up as assistants in nursing or in other cases enrolled as nursing graduates. With respect to age, the study assumed an interval type of data. There was a 60 %; 40-49 age group and 82 % of students were aged between 20 and 29. For inferential type of data, the mean for NS was interpreted to be 0.029, SD= 0,035, PS=0.041 and RD = 0.012 (Eley, D et al. 2010).
The alpha value was placed at [α=0.05] while a 95 % confidence was assumed in order to measure resultant differences between the variables used for the entire study(Eley, D et al. 2010).
For demographic data, the statistical tests used assumed Univariate comparison of TCI scores which was divided into; comparison by age and comparison by student/nurse condition. For this comparison, data was assigned probability levels that matched up with the aforementioned two states. In respect to inferential data, the statistical test used was a two-way ANOVA comparison of TCI scores. This model of statitistical test was used since there were potential imminent differences in ages and student condition that were confounded. Thus, the model was deemed fairer to interpret the data efficiently (Eley, D et al. 2010).
The authors’ research question and hypothesis was linked logically given that the literature provided assumed a coherent approach of addressing issues related to temperament and traits of nursing profession. Given the assumption that few or no study had been conducted before to analyze congruence abilities of nurses, the authors engaged in an extensive and well-thought study to try and present the statistical facts about the issue altogether (Eley, D et al. 2010). Notably, the literature materials used and participants are considered to be a fairer representation of the majority of the nurses or those purporting to assume the profession in future.
The statistical data tests used also conformed to the overall purpose of the study. The use of both dependent and independent variables were used effectively to analyze the research question put forth. The study also stated a gap that to be used for future intense level of research as well as provided the relevance of the research study to those nursing profession.
For instance, the relevance of the research study to nursing practice lies in the fact that the distinct features attributed to temperament and character have been depicted in order to allow for employers to discover the favorable traits and character amongst the profession that can be identified to be effective in postulating nursing roles. Furthermore, employers and policy makers can use the information to postulate the exact scope of traits useful in nursing recruitment exercises (Eley, D et al. 2010).
