Various leadership styles have been determined. Some of them include charismatic, authoritarian and participatory leadership styles. This paper describes and compares two management styles namely citizen and servant leadership.

Description and Comparison

Citizen leadership involves individuals having the capacity to determine and direct the services that they need. People have authority, control and duty to make decisions in this leadership style. Additionally, it is leadership without official authority. Citizen leadership eases arranged action of individuals who are not adequately represented in authorized decision-assembly processes and in low-income societies (Hickman, 2010). The end goal of citizen leaders is to improve the well-being of the whole society. Conversely, servant leadership is a participatory guidance approach in which the servant shares power and prioritizes the needs of other people (Wren, 1995). The servant leader also assists other individuals to grow and perform effectively.

Citizen leadership results in improved quality of services. This is due to an improved link between planning and service provision. Secondly, it results in economic growth. People take key roles in determining their needs and planning. They also determine the services that they require. This results in efficient use of resources hence economic growth. Finally, it results in reduced dependence on the services provided by the official authority (Hickman, 2010). Citizen leaders push for media exposure, environmental protection and so on. People become independent and develop problem-solving skills due to the citizen leadership. Citizen leadership is less glamorous and leaders engage protests to achieve goals. Conversely, servant leadership results in employee and customer loyalty. This is mainly due to consummate handling of customers and workers. More importantly, servant leadership is used by organizations to increase return on investment. It assists organizations with empowerment of their employees (Wren, 1995). It is clear that servant leadership is applicable in places where there is formal authority.

The challenges that citizen leadership faces include lack of power, experience, information, investment and token involvement. On the other hand, one demerit of servant leadership is that it requires a long time for the application (Hickman, 2010). Secondly, many people view it as a feminist ideology. This is mainly because of its characteristics that include listening, empathy, awareness, persuasion and stewardship. The characteristics of citizen leadership include individuals’ power, planning and responsibility.

In conclusion, it is clear that these two leadership styles differ. However, both are effective in ensuring the growth and development of society and organizations.
